Philip Abraham

The Rt Rev Philip Selwyn Abraham DD was the Bishop of Newfoundland from 1942 until his death in 1955[1]. Born on 29 July 1897[2] he was educated at Eton and New College, Oxford. After wartime service with the Royal Artillery he was ordained in 1923 and began his career with curacies at Daybrook and St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. Subsequently Precentor of Christ Church Cathedral,Montreal then Vicar of Romford, in 1937 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Newfoundland; and acceded to the Bishopric itself five years later. His father [3] and grandfather [4] were also Bishops.

He was consecrated Coadjutor Bishop of Newfoundland "on the 1st day of August, 1937, the Right Rev. Philip Selwyn Abraham, M.A., was consecrated in Lambeth Palace Chapel, and arrived in St. John's on the 9th of September."[5]
